Low level light therapy is a painless, non-invasive treatment that uses specialized light to provide long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.
Dry eye can make reading, screen use, driving, and contact lens wear uncomfortable. If you experience burning, redness, fluctuating vision, watery eyes, or a gritty feeling, you may need more than temporary symptom relief.
Vision Center LTD and Waterbury Eye Associates provide personalized dry eye treatment designed around the cause of your symptoms. Equinox® low-level light therapy, or LLLT, is one in-office option that may be recommended for patients with dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
What is Equinox® Light Therapy?
Equinox light therapy is a noninvasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light applied around the eyelids. It is designed to support eyelid health and may help improve dry eye symptoms associated with MGD.
Meibomian glands are tiny oil-producing glands in the eyelids. The oil they produce helps keep tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or do not function properly, tears can evaporate faster and leave eyes feeling dry, irritated, or uncomfortable.
Because dry eye can have more than one cause, Equinox light therapy is not right for everyone. A dry eye evaluation helps our eye doctors determine whether it may be an appropriate part of your treatment plan.
What can I expect during treatment?
During treatment, you will wear a specialized LED mask that delivers gentle light around the eyelid area. Sessions typically take about 15 minutes and are comfortable and noninvasive.
There is no downtime, so you can return to most normal activities after your visit. Your doctor will recommend a treatment schedule based on your symptoms, eye health, and response to care.
Personalized dry eye treatment options
Dry eye treatment is not one-size-fits-all. We may evaluate your tear film and meibomian glands using diagnostic tools such as tear osmolarity testing and meibography, then recommend care based on what we find.
Your plan may include at-home eyelid hygiene, artificial tears, prescription eye drops, or in-office treatment. For eligible adults with MGD-related evaporative dry eye, TearCare® combines controlled eyelid heating with manual gland expression. For select patients with more significant ocular-surface dryness, custom scleral lenses can help protect and hydrate the eye’s surface.
